Snow Closings

Happy New Year to all! 'Tis the season for snow, so we need to prepare for those bad weather days when school has to be closed. If the school is going to be closed, it will be announced on NJ 101.5 FM. School closings are also listed on their web site, NJ1015.com under "G" for Goddard. Finally, you can call the school and check the answering machine; we will leave a recorded message if the school will be closing. However, please check with the radio or internet before calling the school if possible. When school is open and the phone is ringing constantly with parents asking if we are open, it ties up both the phone lines and the teachers. Thank you for your consideration.

Developmental Reports

The school year is half over, which means that it's time for the mid-year Developmental Reports. Teachers will complete a Report for each child, which will be sent home on January 19th for parents to review. A second report goes home at the end of the school year so you can see how your child has progressed over the course of the year. Parent conferences will be scheduled for that week. If you wish to meet with your child's teacher for a more detailed report of your child's progress, please sign up in his or her classroom.

The Book Fair is Coming

Our semi-annual Scholastic Book Fair will be returning during the first week of February. If you would like to buy a Book Fair Gift Certificate for your child's teacher or for anyone else, you can obtain them online at www.scholastic.com/bookfairs/chair.

Special Visitor

In honor of our Children's Literature Theme this month, we will be having a special visitor on Tuesday, January 13th. Mr. Malcolm will be using his puppets and special hat rack to perform a story for the children in the Exploration Room at 10:00am. The story will be the Dr. Seuss classic, The Cat in the Hat.

Get Set

Get Set will be ringing in the New Year with a small celebration on January 5th. We will also explore how the Chinese celebrate their New Year. There's even more to celebrate later in the month, with Martin Luther King's birthday and the 100th Day of School! We will see how much 100 is by counting some of our favorite goodies, jelly beans and M&Ms. The rest of the month will be full of snowy projects and fun in the cold winter weather.

Preschool 1

Happy New Year and welcome back! We hope everyone had a wonderful break. January will be lots of fun. We will make paper lanterns for Chinese New Year and will learn about Martin Luther King, Jr. January is also Children's Literature Month, so feel free to have your child bring in his or her favorite storybooks. We will fill up a jar of M&Ms to count our hundred days of school. All month we will talk about China and will focus on the letters M, N, and O.

Maureen & Melissa

Preschool 2

We're jumping into the new year with a mountain of books and the letters M, N, and O. We will concentrate on the color blue, and our shape will be the diamond. We'll learn about words that rhyme, explore outer space, and travel around the globe to China. The 100th day of school will be celebrated with 100 jellybeans, and Chinese New Year will be remembered as we make special decorations and eat Chinese treats.

Pre-K 1

Happy New Year to Pre-K 1 and their parents! January is going to be busy from start to finish. We'll talk about our New Year's resolutions and goals for 2004. We'll celebrate Martin Luther King's Birthday, then we'll read the Strega Nona books by Tomie DiPaola and we'll vacation in Italy. Strega will take her magic pasta pot to Pre-K 1 and serve a great big pasta lunch! We'll celebrate Chinese New Year with another lunch, sitting on the floor and eating with chopsticks. At the end of January will be the 100th day of school. 100th Day projects will be due, and don't forget report cards and conferences!

Barbara, Valerie, & Jackie

We will begin January by reviewing all the letters and numbers we've already worked on. After our review we will begin the letters M, N, and O, and the numbers 4 and 5. We will also start our study of rhyming words and opposites. We'll celebrate the 100th day of school and the Chinese New Year. We hope everyone had a wonderful holiday vacation with their families and friends... time to get back to work!!

Kindergarten

We will kick of the new year in Kindergarten with plenty to celebrate! In Social Studies we will learn about China and Chinese New Year, and about Martin Luther King, Jr. We'll be making New Year's resolutions, and creating penguins, igloos, snowmen windsocks, snow scenes, friendship wreaths, and Chinese dragons during art. in Language Arts we will focus on the letters P-S, studying beginning and ending sounds, rhyming, and high frequency words. In math we will learn the numbers 20-50, practice counting in fives and tens, study estimation, and we will end the month learning about money. Our Science unit will deal with winter activities, colors, magnets, and end with outer space. Our Fine Arts studies will include jazz, Shel Silverstein, Tomie dePaola's Strega Nona, and Leo Leonni. Finally, we will be cooking up some fun as we make pizza, raisin treats, egg salad, and "Quackers." What a way to start off the new year!
